Located in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, 1433 students, 106 teachers and support staff, SMJK Poi Lam ( Poi Lam National-Type Secondary School ) Ipoh was founded by the Perak Hock Kean Association in 1955. Our school motto is Li Yi Lian Chi ( 礼 义 廉 耻 ) meaning ‘Virtues, Righteousness, Integrity, Mindfulness’.

In the early years, the school started off with only three classrooms and an enrolment of 120 students. Then, in 1962 SMJK Poi Lam was granted status as a government-aided school while Poi Lam High School (Private ) was set up to cater to popular demand by a larger growing student population then. Hence, this led on to the existence of three schools namely SMJK Poi Lam, Poi Lam High School ( Private ) and SRK (C) Poi Lam a.k.a. Poi Lam Primary School, all located in the same compound at Douglas Road (now renamed Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab ).

In the early years, Poi Lam High School ( Private ) was proud to have her own school building and compound in Pengkalan while her government-aided sister primary and secondary schools remained in the same vicinity. Two years ago, Poi Lam Primary School was relocated to their new school which was about 10 km away from its original site. At the end of 2016, it will be SMJK Poi Lam’s turn to join her sister primary school in the new site at Klebang Ria.
The school celebrated its golden jubilee in October, 2005. The first principal of the school was Mr Ng Cheng Aik who retired in 1976 after 21 years of service. Since then, several principals had served the school and a lot of improvement and upgrading works had been carried out for the overall benefit of students and teachers in the school. Mr Koit Sim Siang, the present principal of the school who has now served two years as the head of the school will be retiring in August next year.
