Sauerkraut Side Dish

This recipe was passed down from people in my family. Every time it is passed down it changes. This tradition probably originated with my great grandmother in Germany.

Conversion Table U.S. to Metric and Metric to U.S.

Cutting bacon

  • 1 onion
  • 3 strips of bacon diced
  • one 36 oz. jar of sauerkraut
  • olive oil (1 teaspoon)
  • black pepper
  • cornstarch ( 1 teaspoon)
  • 2 1/2 cups of water


Frying onions

Frying Bacon
Brown onions and bacon till crispy

Add sauerkraut, all your seasonings (olive oil and pepper), and 2 cups water
Simmer over low heat for 45 min. to an hour
Stir all this in your cornstarch and 1/2 cup of water
Stir until thick, do not boil sauerkraut, and enjoy!
