(A recipe of a typical meal from the western area of Northrhine- Westfalia, Germany)
In Germany there is no typical common grown up food tradition at all. All regions have their own food traditions. In the western province of Northrhine- Westfalia, between the city Muenster and the Dutch border, there you can find a food that people eat at Good Friday only. It is named “Struwen” and is served after a beer soup which is the first course of the menu. The whole food on Good Friday contains no meat at all.
This is the recipe for 4 persons:
U.S. to Metric and Metric to U.S.
Yeast, 40 g
Flour, 500 g
Salt, 1 teaspoon
Butter, 30 g
Sugar, 2 spoons
Raisins, 125 g
Milk, 0,5 l
Take a mixing bowl and stir the eggs, sugar, milk, melted butter and flour until it is a dough. Use as much milk as necessary to create a dough you can pour into the pan afterwards. Add raisins and the yeast and stir again. You must not wait until the dough has been raised up.
Take a pan with some fat at medium heat and fill in 1,5 spoons of the dough for each Struwen. (So you might fill in the dough for 4 Struwen into the pan at the same time.) Bake it until the colour is light brown. Then flip the Struwen.
Meanwhile mix sugar and cinnamon = 4: 1 in a little bowl and serve it later to the baked Struwen. You can also serve Nutella or a berry compote.
We also tried to bake vegan Struwen. With success!!
We exchanged milk by rice- milk, butter by vegan butter, used vegan yeast and avoid eggs.
They really smell and taste delicious.
